The Dr. Wonder's Workshop Ministry Partnership

We believe in children!
Deaf children, hearing children, hard-of-hearing children, and special needs children.  We believe in children of all races, colors, and cultures from anywhere on the planet. And we believe that helping children learn the building blocks of character, as taught by the Bible, is just as important as helping them learn their alphabet.

It has been proven that well-designed media such as television series, videos, and websites can make a powerful impact on the lives of children.  But some children, such as those who are Deaf, have a tough time understanding most of these resources because they either require hearing or the ability to read captioning at an unnaturally fast rate.

So, beginning in the spring of 2004, three Deaf ministry organizations agreed to work together to develop a comprehensive five-year outreach program to educate, bless, and minister to Deaf, hearing, and hard-of-hearing children all over North America.  And the flagship of this effort would be the most accessible television series ever produced for children – Dr. Wonder’s Workshop.

We can say this because the series is the first of its kind with an all-Deaf cast of characters who use American Sign Language as their primary language.  But the series also has a full audio track complete with English voice-overs, sound effects, and background music to keep the program interesting and fresh for hearing kids.  And the series is captioned in both English and Spanish (on CC channel #3) for hard-of-hearing children or those who are learning English as a second language. There are also plans to add descriptive narrative for blind children as well.

Silent Blessings Deaf Ministries in Indianapolis, Indiana, serves as the coordinating partner of the team and is responsible for overall production for the weekly series. Scripts, sets, costumes, cast, songs, and audio design are all part of Silent Blessings' responsibility.

Deaf Video Communications in Chicago is in charge of the video production and the final editing, captioning, mastering, duplication, and distribution of program tapes to the broadcast affiliates.

Deaf Missions contributes some elements to the series, but their biggest responsibilities are the design and maintenance of the Dr. Wonder websites – the coolest sites of any Christian outreach for children anywhere on the planet!  They also administer the Dr. Wonder's Kids Club and produce all the special printed materials and curriculum for that club.

These three ministries believe the Dr. Wonder’s Workshop outreach effort will:

  • strengthen Deaf families
  • help connect Deaf families with the special resources they need to nurture their children
  • will demystify deafness and the Deaf culture
  • will encourage ALL children to dream big dreams
  • will teach ALL children positive character-building life skills
  • will show ALL children that Jesus and the Bible are relevant for their lives today
